Hot One Inch Action

Conceived by Jim Hoehnle and Chris Bentzen in 2004, Hot One Inch Action is the original, one-night only show of button art, music and social interaction in Vancouver, BC. The original work of fifty different artists is presented on one inch buttons. These one inch buttons are displayed on the gallery wall and the audience is offered the opportunity to buy randomly selected buttons in mixed bags of five for $5. If the bag purchased does not have the desired button, trade with the people around you. How bad do you want that button?! That’s when the hot action starts.

BoingBoing's Cory Doctorow posted a great link to one Mr. Mark Hogancamp's website 'Marwencol' which archives the 1/16th scale WWII town that Hogancamp built in his backyard. The project interestingly enough works as therapy for Mark whom after being brutally beaten in an attack by five men outside of a bar was left comatose for some time. The project has worked in helping him regain hand and eye coordination and with the emotional struggles the beating left behind.

Amuse Bouche: Stumbling Goat Bistro

The Stumbling Goat located in Phinney Ridge is one of Seattle's more established organic and locavore restaurants with 10 years under their belt, which means they've had plenty of time to hone their skills. Almost all of the ingredients used in their dishes are local and organic insuring the best combination a menu can offer, quality and freshness. The cheese plate which is offered as both an appetizer or dessert is a well balanced mix of fruit, nuts and cheeses. The Willapa Hills Farmstead Blue with it's velvety texture is divine and the Crottin Affine Goat Cheese even won over this generally goat cheese renouncing diner with it's delicate flavour. The main courses were also well balanced and perfectly portioned. The Liberty Duck consisted of a succulent duck breast atop a bed of farro, poached rhubarb and braised chicory, the bitter and sweet of the latter were a perfect contrast to each other. The Braised Wild Boar and Pappardelle was also a pleaser. The gently shredded boar made for a rich ragu to top the simple but delicious pappardelle pasta. The restaurant also boasts a hearty wine and cocktail list with several intriguing mixed drinks like the The Kraken an infusion of spiced rum, smoked Oaxacan maple syrup and ginger beer. All in all the Goat is a great spot for an intimate dinner for two or to catch up with old friends over drinks.

Owner's of Polaroid 600 cameras can get trigger happy again as the Austrian company The Impossible Project will start selling film for the SX-70 and 600 series cameras. Starting March 25th monochrome film packs will be available for purchase from the companies website. Eight exposure packs will set you back between $22-25 plus shipping, but in world where analog films are slowly becoming extinct one can not complain. Color film packs will be arriving this summer.

Etsy Folk: Emma Klingbeil

Strange creatures live in the mind of Emma Klingbeil and thank goodness for it. The Wisconsin native has a bevy of prints over on Etsy that are sure to enchant and disturb in equal measure. Klingbeil's work depicts a vast dreamscape filled with monsters, sea creatures and nurses (perhaps due to the occupational hazards of hanging with said monsters/sea creatures). Reminiscent of David Firth's work (Salad Fingers will forever remain the creepiest of creeps, meant of course in the best possible sense) Klingbeil's creatures are far less malignant and are in fact rather inviting with their love of food and toothsome grins beckoning you to join in the shenanigans.

McQueen Is Dead, Long Live McQueen

The final collection of the late great Alexander McQueen was unveiled yesterday at Paris' Fashion Week. The final showing consisted of just 16 looks, a regal mix of Byzantine and Renaissance Dutch inspiration that is a glorious and sad reminder of the talent extinguished by the designer's death just four weeks ago. The Gucci group announced that the McQueen line would live on although no word on who would helm the design house was given. Needless to say whomever takes over has some rather large shoes to fill, McQueen's skill and vision as a designer were truly singular.

Amuse Bouche: Portage Bay (Ballard)

Portage Bay's motto is "Eat Like You Give A Damn" and believe me they do; about serving locally sourced organic fare, providing attentive service and producing down right yummy food. The local Seattle eatery has three locations (you can find them in South Lake Union and Roosevelt) but it's the Ballard locale that's won my heart for best breakfast joint in town. They offer several types of pancakes to accommodate most diets from gluten free to vegan along with scrumptious french toast. All the former will get you a trip to their toppings bar where you can load up on fresh fruit, nuts, whip cream and gobs of maple syrup. If a sweet breakfast isn't your thing never fear savory lovers the Migas, an egg and chorizo sausage stuffed tortilla is a pleasantly spicy start to any day. The Bay is no secret though to food hounds and there can be a wait for seating. My suggestion is to grab a seat at the counter it tends to seat quicker than the tables and you get a birds eye view of the cooks whipping up all the deliciousness the menu has to offer.

When The Universe Hands You a Big Bucket of Lemons

2009 was supposed to be the the year I reconfigured my career, transitioning from a mainly photographic background to a broader design based one. This blog was meant to be a part of that transition, acting as a place to catalogue design inspirations, interesting trade articles and to showcase some of the talent I one day hope to be even half as proficient artistically as. The whole process started as a hard realization and then acceptance that my initial field of photography had changed so drastically after the birth of digital cameras (an event I still loathe and love simultaneously) that making a living as a printer and dark room tech was not a feasible avenue any more. After acceptance of course came the burning question; then what's next? I have always been drawn to the arts as a whole; film, music, sculpture, painting, as long as it is a vessel for emotional expression I am usually at the very least casually interested. So I knew that "next" would somehow fall under the arts umbrella. I thought long and hard about what mediums I am drawn to on a daily basis, what I might be good at and quite frankly what still made money. I finally came to the conclusion that design both graphic and web (which luckily often integrates photography) was the stepping stone I'd been looking for. I'd all ready had some experience in the field but knew I wanted to do things right and so I swallowed a bit of pride and went back to school to get a more concrete foundation. After a year or so of classes I finally felt poised to re-enter the career pool and start swimming, there was only one catch. A big ugly snag called cancer. This past December I was diagnosed with stage 2 endometrial cancer, something I would find out is linked to a genetic condition called Lynch Syndrome. Not exactly the best news to get when one is all ready facing the pressures of a career change in the middle of one the biggest economic dips the U.S. has weathered in decades. So things got put on hold for a bit including this blog. Surgeries were had, chemo is being administered (I reach the half way mark on the 16th!) and slowly but surely I'm getting back to dipping my feet in the pool. In some ways cancer has been the kick in the ass I'd been looking for both personally and professionally. It has made me re-access what is truly important in life, that pursuing your dreams is never a waste of time, and that we only get one go on the roller coaster (so buckle up and don't keep your eyes closed no matter how scary it is; it all goes so fast you might miss some of the good bits mixed in with the bad.) In the end this post has served a duel purpose; a) to explain my absence from posting and life in general and b) to let people know that life is often tough, it's often not fair but it's also worth pushing forward, taking that big ol' horkin' bucket of lemons and making some god damn lemonade (or better yet a lemon drop or two -cheers!) I'll be posting as often as I can threw the rest of my treatments and adding a few new features, like healthy recipes and reviews of organic/locavore restaurants and products. So here's to picking up where things got left off and to enjoying the the rest of the ride!

The characters which include a troupe of uni-cycling suffragettes, a human cannon ball and those shown above will be the decoration on a mutoscope projecting video footage. The drawings are actually rigged up like paper dolls with hinged limbs so I can move the body parts independently and animate them in flash.

San Diego artist Kelly Vivanco will be showcasing new paintings in her solo show at Halogen in Seattle, WA opening October 9th. Vivanco's paintings are an enchanting mix of small creatures and brunette girls and the sometimes awkward meetings they experience. I particularly love the way so many of her character's are making sideways glances so that if there was just a few more inches of canvas in that direction we would see some site that might explain it all. Of course it wouldn't be half as fun as getting to imagine what's there instead.

The obsessively impressive video of Tim Fort's kinetic artpopped up on a unrelated search I was conducting over on Archive.org. Although the video runs a whopping 6 minutes it rarely looses speed as Fort's kinetic contraptions grow in size and complexity. It's really a testament to this man's patience and fortitude as there are easily several thousand "domino" type objects precisely lined up all for the knocking down.

With the recent threat of Philadelphia having to close it's entire public library system (something that was luckily avoided) I thought I would shine the light on PK's curious and enlightening blog BiblioOdyssey. A receptacle for printed ephemera that inhabits many libraries newly digitized collections, the blog harvests a fascinating mix of images. From drawings of the danse macabre, to engravings of mythical beings and fairy tales, it's truly a revelation that archives of so many libraries are now available with just a few clicks of the mouse and will hopefully entice people to revisit their idea of the public library. I have often spent hours pouring over this collection and following it's links to the original source materials where even stranger worlds can be found for those willing to do a little hunting (OK sometimes a lot but the payoffs are great) threw the catalogues of such institutions like the US National Library of Medicine or the Royal and National Library of Denmark. And just think there's never any late fees for over due books.

Corey Doctorow via the inimitable BoingBoing.net posted a fantastic link today to the photo stream of Chris Seufert who had the honor of interviewing the patron saint of all things peculiar for his upcoming documentary Gorey: The Final Days of An American Gothic. The photo stream which contains production stills of both the author and his Cape Cod home includes gems like this one above where you can find an antique writing desk, a potato and a stuffed pink flamingo among the collections of books and pottery. I cannot really imagine that I would be the person I am today if Gorey's thrilling animated opening to Mystery! hadn't caught my eye as a wee lass. It's always a treat to see the items and ambiance that surrounded this master of wit and whimsy in his final years and with even a few shots of his precious cats to be found in the mix it's a must see for Goreyphiles.

Perhaps the ultimate accolade for this place is their prices with the level of quality their food has one would expect to rack up an expensive bill but with 2 people eating healthily for about $35.00 including drinks Sushi Me wins on all fronts.

Madame Talbot first caught my eye several years ago on a trip to New Orleans where I spotted her Bell Witch print in a French Quarter store devoted to sideshow ephemera. Ashleigh Talbot's beautifully detailed work hearkens back to a time of sideshows and mysticism, chronicling the strange, the murderous and the mad of centuries past. The hand drawn designs are a wonderful mixture of the traditions of European etchings and the American broadside that results in a style both classical and pulp. Fans of 19th century advertising will surely be pleased with the shop's offerings.

White Walls: Dan May @ Copro Nason

One of my favorite painters Dan May has yet another great show this month at Santa Monica's Copro Nason. The show entitled 'The Nature of Things to Come' runs until the 25th and features the ethereal and often longing creatures that May's glades and forests house. I've followed May's work for a couple of years now and have delighted in the ever expanding world of flora and fauna that float and sway in the twilight. May has shown at the gallery some half dozen times now so it's also nice to see he's found a regular home for his work.

Art: And Then There Are Those Who Think They Don't Exist works by Jeannie Lynn Paske is in it's final weekend at Frame Up Studios (3515 Fremont Ave N. Seattle, WA 98100). Paske creates beautifully delicate scenes of wistful and curious creatures using watercolor, charcoal & pastels. The artist also has a show opening next week at Columbus Ohio's Rivet Sept 5th- 30th.

Eats: Ooba Tooba's Mexican Grill. Take a trip to the East Side and visit any one of Ooba's three locations in Redmond, Woodinville or Bellevue. Everything on their menu is super fresh and delicious and the black beans with crema agria are to die for. The only thing wrong with this place is trying to figure out what to order since it's all really great.

Reclaim2Fame's charming robot's made from recycled and re-purposed materials could melt the heart of even the miserliest miser. They're chock full of expression and look like they'd each make the ultimate mechanical side kick. Artist Will W has been using reclaimed items in his art since the early 90's and helped to foster it's use in the Miami Design District where he opened a large workshop to showcase other reclamation artists. You can sometimes find work here from his Mom Mickey G a retired hair stylist and recycled fur coat teddy bear maker.

A stupendous collection of circus posters and images is being showcased at www.circusmuseum.nl; boasting 8,000 posters, 7,000 photos and picture postcards in addition to books, magazines and programmes from the 1880's to present times. It's a virtual nirvana for any circus geek, freak and fan. The bulk of the collection comes from über-collector and circus historian Jaap Best. Best became mesmerized by the big top in the Netherlands at an early age and never looked back, amassing an amazingly thorough collection of printed ephemera. It is also the largest collection of Adolph Friedländer's work who from 1880-1930 was the premier producer of signage for the three ringed shows. The photos above and below are all examples of Friedländer's skills and are just a few of the treats that await if you're willing to step right up and take a peek.

I was reminded today while reading a great article on Paper n Stitch about the very cool and curious light boxes made by Christopher Elsasser aka Munstre. mr girlscare above is hands down my favorite although it was one of his medically themed boxes that first caught my eye.

The boxes come in two different sizes (mini & standard) and as wall sconces. There is also a series of one of a kind and specialty pieces.

BoingBoing Helps Shed Light On Photographers Woes

There's a must read post over on BoingBoing.net today that any photographer or fan of photography should read. Post 9-11 the amount of innocuous photographers being harassed and arrested for potential terrorist behavior is regrettably on the rise. It's a rather harrowing thought that my fascination with architecture and wanting to photograph architectural details could arouse suspicion with law enforcement, but photographers around the world are finding that their subject matter is making them persons of interest. A UK organization has just launched the Photographer Not a Terrorist campaign that gives information about the rights of individuals who find themselves being questioned by law enforcement and great stickers that proclaim I'm A Photographer Not A Terrorist. As friends of several urban explorers and street photographers I'd hate to think of any of them getting hassled for simply trying to capture the wonders of the world and it inhabitants. Or that photographs like those Walker Evans did in a three year long study of people on the NYC subway using hidden cameras could be an unthinkable thing of the past. Definitely food for thought.

If you're in Seattle the weekend of August 21st and are looking for something to do, might I suggest the opening of Travis Louie's "Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Monster" show at Roq La Rue. Louie has been producing a steady stream of lovable monster portraits for a few years and this show boasts the promise of larger and more ambitious works. The artist also has his first book coming out called "Curiosities" which looks like it it will be dropping around the same time. I've been a big fan of Louie's work for a few years and would love to have a collection of his work all bound up together, for me it would be like looking threw an old family photo album, that belongs to the monsters under the bed.

Just posted the new line of keepsake books on Etsy. I know I'm biased but I can't help but being really excited. They came out even better than expected. The six new designs make up a mini "Decades" collection, that takes a visual journey from the 1920's till today. My current favorite is this 1940's film noir inspired design called "Shanghai Lil". I tried to capture the mood and style of each era and was inspired by the textile and jewelry design that was particular to each one. Here's a link to the collection.

A Lesson In Persistant Branding

A great piece on the virtues of consistent branding on Designer-Daily.com that compares the logos of Coca-Cola and Pepsi over the last 123 years. Coke might not have won the blind taste challenge but they definitely win points for consistency of brand identity with very little changing in their iconic logo since 1885. The classic logo stills stands up today which can only help cement Coke's place as an advertising icon. Pepsi however, seems to have stayed true to the goal of tapping into the youth generation with several logo redesigns to "keep up with the times", just like their use of each decades "It" pop stars for commercials Pepsi seems to gravitate to the new, now, next train of thought when it comes to keeping their product on the consumer radar. At the end of the day it looks like both roads can lead to success, but neither are devoid of risks. With proper product and company branding a must in today's markets it's a good debate for any company to have before venturing into advertising.

Great find today on Paper n Stitch where you'll find an article about the fantastic illustration of Alberto Cerriteno. If you enjoy monsters and cephalopods you'll probably find as many new favorite art pieces as I did on his website www.albertocerriteno.com. His work as an Art Director/Animator for Walt Disney's Museum is also quite impressive and beautifully captures the whimsy and nostalgia of the early Disney works.
